Travel Associated Skin Disease

Sarah Catherine Hogan, Stephen Morris-Jones, Rachael Morris-Jones

Abstract

Travel associated skin disease is extremely common and a frequent cause of the returning traveller seeking medical attention. As a general rule, widespread cutaneous eruptions usually represent reactive rashes pointing to an underlying systemic infection or allergic reaction. These patients often present with malaise, fever and a generalised or spreading rash. Localised skin diseases manifesting as blisters, papules, nodules and ulcers etc usually represent localised stings/bites/trauma or the sites of skin penetration from infections. Widespread rashes may require serological investigations and localised reactions a skin biopsy for culture and histology.
