The Nordic Family Lifestyle Workshops - Design of an intersectoral health education for learning health promoting lifestyles

Abstract

Background: Non communicabel diseases are increasing among children and young peopleall over the world. Nordic children belong to the healthiest in the world, but recently it is reported that the health is declining especially for teenagers. However here are positive health trends for the youngest children (2-5 yrs), which indictes that learning about health should start at an early age and from a health promoton perspevtive.

Aim: This article describes the contents of the health education model, Nordic Family Lifestyle Workshops (NFLW), its theoretical foundations and how it was developed.

Methods: The model has been developed in a project with an action research approach in cooperation with parents and professionals in all the five Nordic countries.

Results: The NFLW is a model of an inersectoral health education aimed to be used in the pre-school in leading discussion groups of parents in partnershiop with pre-school teachers, health care staff and researchers from a health promotion perspective. The working material of the NFLW is based on a holistic view of children and their health and deals with the issues faced by the majority of families with children of pre-school age on a daily basis. The focus is on health promoting lifestyle choices and how to develop the prticipants´ciritical health literacy built aound the concept of the actors in the child´s life working together and creating collaboration between various sectors promoting lifestyles in children.
