Physician partnerships drive Novant Health success

Thomas H. Woollen, Carl Armato

Abstract

The health care payment landscape is shifting from status quo fee-for-service and toward more accountable payment models such as bundled payments and shared savings.  This rise of new accountable care models – which shift financial risk for cost and quality to providers – places a premium on physician partnership strategies as a way to achieve coordinated and consistent care.  Health systems emerging as national leaders are those that have welcomed the opportunity to become more efficient so the team can provide better care. To do that, Novant Health has embraced key leadership changes which have allowed them to evolve into a stronger health system. Without doubt, the key to their success in today’s competitive landscape has been growing their partnerships with physicians. Novant Health has successfully integrated physician leaders into all areas of the organization in decision-making roles and it is driving their high performance.
