Arthrodesis for Trapeziometacarpal Arthritis

Jason Srnec, Eric Wagner, John Capo, Marco Rizzo

Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) of the trapeziometacarpal (TM) joint can result in severe pain and impair hand function. Treatment of early-stage arthritis consists of conservative treatment and only after failure of these options should surgical intervention be considered. A variety of surgical treatments have been described and debate remains about the optimal surgical option(s). In addition, making comparisons between studies is difficult due to lack of randomized controlled studies and consistent outcome reporting. TM joint arthrodesis has traditionally been performed in patients requiring high function and good grip strength in their hand. Complications of the procedure include nonunion, limited mobility, radial neuritis, complex regional pain syndrome, and development of arthritis in adjacent joints. Results from literature regarding outcomes have been varied. However, even with the development of complications resulting in limitations, patients typically are very satisfied with the procedure and achieve an improvement in function and reduction in pain.
